Seeing No Progress, Some Schools Drop Laptops

This article in the NY Times offers a blistering critique of 1:1 laptop programs. Without data, don't expect to be successful with your 1:1 programs.

So far, Powell Butte, Tumalo and Tom McCall students have taken the NETS online survey. Results may be viewed online. Send me an email if you'd like the access url.

First Legislative Hearing on 1:1 Computing

This is a Real Video Stream from a hearing last week in the House Education, Innovation Subcommittee. It is a bill that would create a Task Force to look at the obsticals preventing 1:1 computing in Oregon.

The Hearing starts 7minutes and 26 seconds into the stream. The Committee members were on the House floor at the scheduled start time, so we had a little delay in starting. Springfield and 4J did a great job presenting.

Specifications for next years Laptops for Students

In our recent regional meeting (Tumalo and Powell Butte Schools) we discussed the specifications that we would like see in the next round of laptops for students. Here's our list:

Wireless – (Redmond wants Intel chip for management)
Tablet not necessary or even wanted
Small in size and weight - student 'friendly'
Rubber feet to prevent slipping on desk
Basic CD player (burner not required, can use flash memory sticks)
Processor – min 2Ghz Pentium
Memory - min 2GB
Screen – 12 in OK to save

NETS surveys for students, teachers and administrators

I created three surveys for students, teachers and administrators based on the NETS Standards, published by ISTE. These standards are scheduled for revision and release at NECC 2007 this summer but I think you'll find them still helpful. I think it will be important for us to have some baseline data at the beginning of the 1:1 programs. Please take a look and post suggestions for changes as a comment. All three ESDs may use these surveys. I think the data and the change in responses as the program moves forward will be interesting.

Explore Learning: Math & Science with Gizmos

Explore Learning ( www.explorelearning.com ) has an intriguing set of interactive online tools (gizmos) for learning math and science. They are designed for grades 6-12, and are available on a subscription basis to teachers individually, schools, and districts. I learned about them from a Bend teacher who visited Shoreline School District in Wa, who thought they were great. I’m in conversation with the regional sales rep about getting these Gizmos available to the Pilot classrooms for 90 days as free preview (its normally 45 days) Please take a look at their web site - there are good demo movies and you can use the Gizmo’s for 5 minutes to see what they look like.

Security Tracking for Laptops

I have contacted Computer Security Products, Inc. regarding the security plates that can be placed on the laptops. These are the security plates that Springfield School District showed us during our site visit.

1-9 plates $25.00/each

10-300 plates $15.00/each

Once you place the order Computer Security Products has you complete a spreadsheet with your laptop information which they in turn "dump" into their database. Then, if the laptop is lost or stolen and is recovered, there is an 1-800 number they can call and Computer Security will know who owns the product and return to its rightful owner.
