Apparently no hardware is required to manage the Wireless Access Points.
There IS hardware that helps with management and rollout of wireless systems, but it is not required for them to work the way we want them to.
Thanks for the follow up.

During the HDESD mtg in April on the Ebits rollout, Lane ESD asked about continuing to work with Qwest agents for Ebits orders - as opposed to working directly with Qwest. This option is very important to LESD. We'd like a decision or ruling on this in the next couple weeks. If this is option not available, we'd like an explanation of why, as well as a review of how account support will match service from agents.

I need a clarification on the BAN field on the EBits request Form.
If I request a new BAN, my understanding is that my ESD would not be eligible for erate this year, true? My intention is to choose the BAN corresponding to the existing T1 (or other Qwest service) to the respective district, and enter it on that downstream district's Request Form.
Do I have this right?

As the person responsible for the technology, I am here to make tools that you all will find valuable and actually use. With that in mind, I have been trying to build tools that are functional and easy to use. But (there's always a "but" in there), I'm not "you all" and I'm not an educator. So I can build things I think would work well for you.

What I need from everyone out there is feedback. Tell me what works. What doesn't work. What you like. What you dislike. These resources and tools are a first attept at giving you something useful. Tell us how useful it is and how if it could be made more useful.

We would like very much to provide a home for a forum like Greg describes. Who do you all think it should be done? How can we with the OVSD project help facilitate and foster the community?
Fri, 26 Jan 2007 22:02:30 +0000Greg Lund-Chaixcomment 212 at http://k12partners.orgIt's a process...

It is interesting to note that the three subject areas where 1:1 computers were most effective at Springfield--as stated to us by the teachers and kids--were writing, science, and social studies. I am anxious to see how the other two "R's" reading and math, will be served in the 1:1 classroom. According to the session at Hillsboro on Friday there is some good math software out there, so I know it happens.

D.C.
It turns out that ESIS (the JInitiator in particular) crashes IE in Vista. This was unacceptable, so we went back to the drawing board. We found a whitepaper that allowed us to modify the MSDN version of XP Tablet PC Edition to create a CD that could use the CD Keys provided by Gateway and would allow sysprep to work correctly. That allowed us to start from scratch and not have to use the recovery CD.

So we imaged our laptops with the following:

Windows XP tablet PC Edition (all Service Packs and Hotfixes through 1/10/07)

Office 2003 Professional

Frontpage 2003

OneNote 2003

MS Photostory

Adobe Reader, Flash & Shockwave

Tablet PC Education Pack

Tablet PC Experience Pack

Inspiration

Itunes w/ Quicktime

Audacity

Power DVD

Nero Burning ROM

TrendMicro Anti-Virus

Critical to funtioning on our network was the latest Intel Proset Wireless drivers with the Single Sign-On features installed. With this driver and the 802.1x policies supported through Windows 2003 Active Directory, we are able to support our Foundry wireless infrastructure without any user interaction. Turn it on and logon, the machine uses an administrative profile to connect to the wireless network and waits for it to start before running logon scripts and applying group policy. We're very pleased with the functionality so far.

Russ Fagan

Network Administrator

Redmond School District

www.redmond.k12.or.us

[email protected]
Thu, 18 Jan 2007 16:29:44 +0000rfagancomment 193 at http://k12partners.orgI thought the goals were already published...

The goals we're (NWRESD) using were posted on this blog post:
http://k12partners.org/about/1to1

and included in this document:
http://k12partners.org/system/files/Oregon+1to1+Grant+Docs..doc

1. To increase student achievement and improve students’ 21st Century Skills.

2. To increase technology use and literacy with students, teachers, administrators and communities.

3. To increase communication and involvement between and among teachers, students, families and the community.

4. To improve the teaching and learning process through the innovative uses of technology and instructional design.

5. To contribute to the research base on the use of wireless mobile computing devices on student achievement.

Much the same but still with significant differences. I'm reluctant to tell the FGSD staff that we have a different set of goals. They just turned in and will publish today an extensive planning matrix based on the 5 goals identified in the Oregon 1:1 published documents referenced above.

;-) PaulWed, 10 Jan 2007 16:56:43 +0000pnelsoncomment 165 at http://k12partners.orgVolume Licensing

We ran into a ton of issues attempting to obtain VLK media and a key for the Tablet PC edition. We had both hardware and software issues and were yanked around equally by MS, Gateway, and our software vendor. The easy answer...Windows Vista. Our School Agreement includes Vista and Vista supports all the Tablet functions. It also fully recognizes the hardware. We are rolling forward with Windows Vista as the OS and will add Office 2003 from our VLK as well. We are working out the details of our teacher and student images and will be rolling after X-Mas break imaging all the laptops.

Russ Fagan

Network Administrator

Redmond School District

www.redmond.k12.or.us

[email protected]
Mon, 18 Dec 2006 18:03:50 +0000rfagancomment 147 at http://k12partners.orgThank you, Russ!

1. Statewide meeting in February: How many are going to ITSC? This would be a good place to expose US to what's happening in tech ED around Oregon and to expose Oregon to the 1:1 project. It's not too late to register. We have a good size group from FGSD going. Dates are Feb. 18, 19, 20 at the Portland Sheraton Hotel. Registration goes up on Dec. 15th. http://itsc.oetc.org

2. About insurance, I posted the email I got from Gateway. I'm impressed with the speed of their reply and with the level of their basic coverage. See this post: http://k12partners.org/node/66

3. I know we're all busy so it's hard to keep up. One of the best features of the K12Partners.org site is RSS. I suggest using Firefox and use the little orange RSS icon on the K12Partners site to create a live bookmark. That way, you'll have current information just a click away. Until we are good at doing this I think we need to resort to an email list.

4. We are working on a schedule...

5. We need to work on goals and objectives. We did a good job of setting project management goals (thanks Brian and Jennifer!) but we need to establish professional development and classroom learning goals.

6. RE: media kit, we need more work on that though we did discuss this and are making progress.

7 and 8 we'll have to work it into the schedule.

I encourage all of you to also participate in the 1:1 Moodle. Did you know there is a TON of free, way cool software there you can download for your laptops? ;-)

Mon, 11 Dec 2006 22:38:13 +0000pnelsoncomment 143 at http://k12partners.org
